Ok, there's now stuff in the "about" section of the site. This week is pretty busy, so I probably won't make too many updates (if any at all) until next week. Pretty soon, I should have the wiki set up to be much more useful and perhaps even have the beginnings of my own CMS in place. In checking the visitor stats, I saw that there were actually a few people visiting my site. At first glance, I would assume it was just J.J., Marie, or Joann, but the browser ident strings told a different story. Whoever you are out there, I'm glad you've stopped by. Come by again and maybe I'll have something to show you, or just subscribe to one of the RSS feeds in the "about" section and you won't have to bother checking up on the site every day.

I finally bit the bullet and bought myself some web-space and a domain name. A Small Orange offers probably the best deal I've ever seen on hosting, so I couldn't pass it up. Initially, I'm just going to move this page over there, but in the future, I plan on making an entirely new site and perhaps try my hand at writing my own CMS to power the thing. In the next day or two, you should be able to point your browser at http://hipsterfag.com and be amazed by the glory of the same thing you're reading now.

Jageward has just done a complete overhaul of her site and I must say, I'm in awe. I have to admit, I kind of lifted the idea for the dark theme of this site from the original pain cave, and J.J.'s Pain Cave Version 2.0 does a one-up on both of them. J.J. has always had a much better eye for design than I have, and here, with nothing more than TextEdit and AppleWorks, she's made a very very cool site with a nice retro/tech/minimalist vibe. Very simple, very clean, and the graphics create a surprisingly cool mood.

I've realized that most of my designs lately have been very similar, probably due to the fact that reading 9 million blogs a day makes one think that a site has to have a particular format and certain features in certain places. One of the great things about just starting out making web pages is that you have very few preconceived notions about how things should look or act.

i remember way way back around '94 or '95 reading some guitar magazine and somebody had written about the "creative process" in rock song writing (i think it may have been liz phair, but i'm not sure). anyway, the article made mention that lifting ideas from other people's music was a good way to get the juices flowing, and noted that the main riff to one of her songs was essentially the bassline from a My Bloody Valentine song in reverse. i had never heard of mbv, but said "hmm... cool name, i should listen to them sometime". last night, i read a little review of a boards of canada album in which mbv was listed as an influence and i thought "hmm... cool name, i should listen to them sometime". today i downloaded a few of their songs and was blown away. when i looked them up on amazon, i realized that they haven't made an album since '93 and this stuff is more progressive than any rock album i've heard in a decade. my irrational side says "buy Loveless now", while my rational side is a sucker for free shipping and says "find $14.01 in other stuff to add to your cart first". we'll see which side wins.

At war with the monkies

Apparently I'm about a week late in finding this out, but it seems that baboons are terrorizing Cape Town and ransacking local homes. First of all, I find it hilarious that despite our technological advances, we still can't build a monkey-proof house, but what is amazing is that these things are maliciously destroying property. They are breaking into schools and stealing sandwiches right out of kids hands and opening windows and doors, but what seems to upset people the most (and rightly so) is their tendency to pull clothes out of dressers and pee on them.

But the best part of all this is the proposed explanation: the old alpha male, Charlie, used to keep his bitches on a short leash and away from the humans, but the new alpha male, Stoffel, seems unable or unwilling to keep said bitches in check. Are these people nuts? I'm sure monkey coups are quite turbulent events and there's always fallout after a regime change, but these people are letting monkeys run rampant in their homes. Since these people are on a first name basis with these things (sounds a bit familiar if you ask me), I'm assuming they know where this Stoffel dude hangs out, which should make it easy to wheel a stereo up to his cave, play loud rock music until he cracks, and replace him with a puppet baboon dictator. To be honest, you may not even need a baboon, a small to medium sized child should work fine.
